TUEETOR CHATS with Shareen of Fashion Makerspace

Fashion Makerspace began in 2015 as a dream to provide a creative, friendly and nurturing environment for people to enter the fields of fashion, dressmaking & digital design. The outfit aspires to bring artisanal sewing and pattern-making skills into the makers’ hands, and letting them into the gratifying experience of realizing their creations. Over the years, Fashion Makerspace has grown into a community bonded by creative skills, knowledge and camaraderie.

We interviewed Shareen (top photo, second from left), one of the founders of Fashion Makerspace, for the following Tueetor Chat:

Hi Shareen! What excites you about your industry?

The whole idea started when I was working and studying in the US. One thing that struck me there was the very open culture- they were very open to sharing what they learnt and what mistakes they made. Even in the fashion industry, there were people who would spend extra time to teach me the ropes of the industry and their work, and when I went to makerspaces there, the same culture existed where people helped people so that everyone could grow, learn and inspire one another.

More than ever, that guidance helped inspire me and grew my passion tremendously.

That’s when the idea of Fashion Makerspace started more than 5 years ago with my 2 partners Ken Low & Hailey Lim- to build a community of people interested in this craft and to help everyone along their sewing journey and realize their sewing dreams. And share not just the steps in doing the work, but also tips and techniques to let students learn the better way, and even learn from our own mistakes.

What excites you most about your industry?

It’s an appreciation of skills, experience and craftsmanship and it makes people wonder at how things

are made. This industry is evolving so rapidly it’s hard to keep up, but there’s always a lot of creativity brewing all the time.

What do you hope your students will achieve?

To have a passion for making their own pieces and feel the gratification in working towards evolving and bettering their craftsmanship through experimentation and practice! We had students who started their own labels and some who kept making endless number of pieces and kept challenging themselves to even make their own wedding outfits. Really inspiring!

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received?

Trust yourself.

Who inspires you?

Those who live and breathe their passion like Alber Elbaz and those who live for the happiness of others like Daisaku Ikeda.

What have you just learnt recently that blew you away?

There is no constant, therefore urgency is important in the things that you do. Beyond that, working with the right people will make all the difference.

How do you unwind?

Reading E-books to unwind and being with my baby!

Recommend us a book or film you think everyone should read and why. “Educated” by Tara Westover. It’s a highly memorable true story and it teaches everything about tenacity, ignorance and independence. One can only be amazed by the triumph of the author.

What is a quote you live by?

As long as one has hope, there is nothing one cannot achieve; everything is born from hope.
