If you haven’t heard, the latest season of Game of Thrones (GoT) is here.
Even if you aren’t a GoT fan, its definitive quote “Winter Is Coming” is an adage we can apply to our actual lives. It speaks of preparedness, vigilance, and the inevitable passing of time and seasons.
We go through different seasons in life; some are good, some are not so. Instead of worrying or getting caught off-guard, let’s equip ourselves with new knowledge and perspectives. And if you’re thinking of upgrading your skills, there’s never a better time.
1. Assess your strengths and weaknesses
“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.”
– Tyrion Lannister
Despite his stature, Tyrion Lannister understands that his biggest asset is his wit and intellect. He uses it to stay alive and eventually became advisor to a ruler.
Understand your strengths so that you can focus on what you are good at. Develop skills in these strong areas. Whatever season of life you may find yourself in, you will have these skills to help you overcome challenges and emerge stronger.
2. Learn to market yourself
“I am Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, of the blood of Old Valyeria. I am the dragon’s daughter, and I swear to you that those who would harm you will die screaming.”
– Daenerys Targaryen
From a little girl living in exile to “Mother of Dragons”, Daenerys Targaryen is certainly one who doesn’t shy away from making her titles and accomplishments known to the world. Her ability to position herself as a capable leader earns her loyal followers and allies.
Introducing yourself, as well as what you do, is an important skill that can be honed. Instead of sprouting off a fancy title tagged to your name, learn to explain your job scope or career purpose using easy-to-understand words in a single sentence.
Take a step further and learn to market yourself effectively on social media. Engage a tutor to coach you in Social Media Marketing or Personal Branding.
3. Build a strong support system
“When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.”
– Lord Eddard Stark
Surround yourself with people who are willing to journey alongside you. Whatever season you are in, you are always stronger when you have a support system. Better still, find a mentor or a life coach.
With powerful life lessons and skills that her mentor imparted to her, Arya Stark went from simply being a younger daughter of the Stark house to a fearless warrior.
A life coach is able to challenge your self-limiting beliefs and help you develop beyond the current state. You can either ask around in your network or hire a life coach.
