Joanne Liu

Hello, my name is Joanne. I first started my music journey with Yamaha at 4 under the Junior Music Class. I stopped learning after about a year and my music journey continued when I was about Primary 2. My piano teacher constantly pushed and encouraged me. She would encourage me to memorise all exam pieces when I took the graded ABRSM examinations. With much hard work and determination, I managed to attain Grade 8 in both piano and theory within a few years. After O levels, I enrolled into a tie-up scholarship programme between the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and the National Institute of Education (NIE). It is a double diploma course to become a certified MOE teacher. I accepted the offer to continue my studies and obtained a Bachelor in Arts Education (Music). The 3 years in NAFA gave me multiple opportunities to perform and I was exposed to a variety of music forms such as Gamelan, Chinese and Western percussion instruments, and Pop Band performances where we created song covers. It was also where we learnt theory and history - my favorite subjects. It was also when I went to pursue my second instrument, singing. I attained the Trinity College ATCL Diploma in Performance for Singing within a few years of vocal training. I started teaching one-to-one lessons privately when I started my formal teaching years with MOE in a secondary school as a music teacher. I did not want to lose my piano knowledge and wanted to share it with other like-minded students who want to learn piano. I have taught young children from ages 4 to adult students. Some students learn for leisure and some to gain ABRSM certifications. I am open to teaching any student so long as the student is willing to learn and grow together with me. I firmly believe in pure hard work and discipline. I hope to impart the knowledge and experience I have to my students. I look forward to embark this music journey with you (or your child)!
